Juliana's Place has been giving away one complimentary soup on New Year's Day to all of our devoted customers for the past 14 years.
Let's commemorate Haiti's independence with this symbolic food, Soup Joumou, also known as squash soup, which symbolizes the first action we took after being freed from slavery.
Even though they had to make it for their masters, Haitian slaves were not allowed to consume the dish.
On this date in 1804, we proclaimed our freedom!
The liberated Haitians gathered and prepared a huge pot of soup. With full stomachs, they sang and danced all night long. "L'union fait force!" This phrase may have been spoken to you or written on the flag before. It means "United We Stand, Divided We Fall."
